ALABAMA COASTAL FOUNDATION 2008 COASTAL KIDS QUIZ: April 29th at Daphne United Methodist Church: 5th grade science competition: volunteers to arrive at 7:30am to help as runners, timers, set up t-shirt & lunch tables

SOUTH ALABAMA REGIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION BUSINESS EXPO/JOBS FAIR: Friday, May 2nd:  9am-2pm at Mobile Civic Center: 18 & older volunteers to staff event: shifts: 7am-12:30pm or 8:30am-2pm;volunteer orientation Wednesday, April 23rd at 9am in SARPC Board Room at 110 Beauregard Street

MOBILE BAYKEEPER SPRING HILL MEDICAL CENTER GRANDMAN TRIATHLON: Saturday, May 31st : 7a.m. at Fairhope Pier: volunteers prior to event for packet preparation & pick up, course set up/take down, day of race traffic monitors

ALABAMA PRE/POST ADOPTION CONNECTIONS: CAMP APAC: June 16-20 at Camp ASCCA in Jackson Gap, AL: 19 & older counselors to supervise & lead groups of children in canoeing, hiking, archery, ropes courses & other summer camp activities; meals, lodging, transportation provided; interested volunteers must apply by May 15, 2008

ALABAMA COASTAL FOUNDATION: now accepting applications for summer interns with studies in Environmental Science, Elementary & Intermediate Teaching or Computer Science technologies; 20 hours weekly, some weekend or evening work required; must have strong interpersonal, organizational & written skills with backgrounds in elementary education, data collection, research & development & web design; knowledge of gulf coastal environment & current issues

MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION: June 21st: 10am-2pm: training for volunteers interested in wish granting for ill children

VIA! SOLUTIONS: March 24-26th: volunteers to stuff disaster preparedness backpacks; March 28th, March 31st-April 4th: volunteers to distribute the backpacks

AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD SERVICES DIVISION:  volunteers to assist with registration & canteens at blood drives in North Mobile County: Bucks, Axis, Citronelle, Mt. Vernon areas; volunteers to train to assemble blood bags at blood drives & at Josephson Blood Donor Center: training consists of 2 five hour days for orientation & training for certification

BAY AREA FOOD BANK: weekday & Saturday volunteers to sort truckloads of food products, process & re-box for delivery

EASTERN SHORE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCENIC OVERLOOK WELCOME CENTER STAFFER: Saturdays & Sundays: morning or afternoon shifts: represent the ES Chamber, welcome visitors, tourists, provide information on Eastern shore area

UNITED CEREBRAL PALSY: ADULT DAY PROGRAM: 18 & older, background working with people with disabilities helpful; weekdays 8am-2pm, may be in shifts: supervise clients in all areas of daily program routine; establish positive relationship with clients; must be able to lift 50 pounds regularly

SYBIL SMITH FAMILY VILLAGE: scrapbook volunteer: maintain, collect, record, save in scrapbook news pertinent to Sybil Smith Family Village

 

ANIMALS:

THE HAVEN SHELTER (Fairhope): grant writers, office aides to answer phones, foster homes; donations of bleach, paper towels & cat litter

ANIMAL RESCUE FOUNDATION: early morning volunteers to let dogs out, clean kennels & refresh food & water; transport animals to & from pet adoptions; foster homes for pets awaiting adoption; office aids

MOBILE SPCA: 18 & older volunteers to staff pet adoptions, Saturday morning volunteers to clean, water & feed cats up for adoption that day; weekday office aides to answer phones; newspapers for SPCA office & vet shelter: please take to either location Tuesdays-Saturdays

FRIENDS OF THE MOBILE ANIMAL SHELTER: 18 & older kennel care & help with pet adoptions

MOBILE BOTANICAL GARDENS: train as docent to guide groups through garden areas

GULF COAST EXPLOREUM: OUR BODY EXHIBITION: The Universe Within: wide variety of volunteer opportunities within exhibition gallery & throughout Exploreum

WHIL RADIO READING SERVICE: weekday mornings: audition to read printed materials on air for sight impaired listeners

OAKLEIGH MUSEUM COMPLEX: open 7 days a week: weekend volunteers for all positions in special demand: docents to lead daily(10am-4pm) tours of three-house museum complex for Historic Mobile Preservation Society & help with special events; morning(10am-1pm) or afternoon(1-4pm) shifts available; volunteers to work in Minnie Mitchell Archives library or to conduct research

MOBILE CARNIVAL MUSEUM: docents & night & weekend volunteers for Special Event Team

 

 

CHILDREN/YOUTH/PARENTING:

ST. MARY’S HOME: Monday-Thursday afternoons: 15 & older: groups & individuals to participate in recreational activities for children; background check required

FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM: 60 & older, available 20 hours per week, limited income: provide guidance & support for children with special or exceptional needs from birth to age 21 to increase intergenerational relationships

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS: 18 & older program aides for coaching, help with youth activities

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS of the YMCA: 18 & older mentors for children 5-14 years old in school or community based programs; male mentors for boys  are in special demand; must have valid driver’s license & proof of insurance; background screening & training required

SYBIL SMITH FAMILY VILLAGE: child care aides to care for children of residents who are attending classes or seeking employment

 

CLERICAL/COMPUTER:

VIA! SOLUTIONS SENIOR CITIZENS SERVICES: 18 & older, weekdays,  whole or half day shifts: assist with information & referral calls to help senior citizens with disaster preparedness & recovery; update resource database, assist with wellness events

FAMILY PROMISE OF COASTAL ALABAMA: weekdays 12:30-5pm: office aides for Day Center for temporarily homeless families with children: answer phones & door, take crisis referral information, assist staff as needed

VICTORY HEALTH PARTNERS: 18 & older: weekday office aides: filing, answer phones, data entry skills helpful; morning or afternoon shifts available

LEGAL SERVICES ALABAMA: 23 & older: weekdays: office aides to assist attorneys: typing correspondence, pleadings, court runners, answer phones

AMERICAN RED CROSS: 18 & older: weekday office receptionist, help with data entry, participate in Speakers’ Bureau

AARP INFORMATION CENTER: weekday volunteers to answer phones, dispense information about senior programs

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS: 18 & older: weekday office aides; computer skills helpful

 

CONSTRUCTION:

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY:  18 & older volunteers to help build houses in Mobile County Mondays-Saturdays; Saturday groups especially in demand; volunteers under 18 may help with special projects

 

DRIVING/DELIVERY:

REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT PROGRAM: weekday transportation to & from work for refugees: 7am to take to work, pick up/return home 3-4pm; small stipend; van transportation preferable but not mandatory

SYBIL SMITH FAMILY VILLAGE TRANSPORTATION AIDE: use personal vehicle weekdays to transport resident clients for errands & appointments; gas mileage reimbursed

 

EDUCATION/LITERACY:

THOMAS SULLIVAN CENTER: Mondays-Thursdays: 3:30 pm: homework helpers & computer instructors

ORCHARD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Library aide to help with data entry, internet research

INDEPENDENT LIVING CENTER: 16 & older: weekdays: morning or afternoon shifts: tutors for individuals with various disabilities

DEARBORN YMCA: 19 & older: weekdays: 6:30am-6pm in shifts: tutor youth K-8th grades; assist teacher in child development center

THE LITTLE TREE in THE LEARNING TREE CENTER: 18 & older, weekdays: 8am-3pm: help in classroom with younger children: assist with meals, educational & recreational activities; train in methods of Applied Behavior Analysis; background & SDE check required

GOODWILL EASTER SEALS LITERACY PROGRAM: FAMILY LITERACY AIDE/AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM AIDE: weekday mornings or evenings: assist staff providing Family Literacy Workshops to parents & children at various school locations: story reading, arts & crafts, other activities; weekday afternoons: help staff provide after school sessions for middle school youth in a Junior Achievement format; ADULT LITERACY TUTORS: work one-on-one with student to improve reading skills; GED tutoring available for interested volunteers

 

SENIORS:

THOMAS SULLIVAN CENTER: weekdays: 10-11am: fitness instructor, computer instructor for seniors

AREA AGENCY ON AGING: 50 & older volunteers to teach health/wellness curriculum for senior groups in Mobile, Baldwin & Escambia Counties

SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM: 60 & older, available 20 hours per week, limited income: sign up to train as companion for frail, elderly clients: light housekeeping, errand assistance

 

HEALTH/HOPSITALS/HOSPICE:

INFIRMARY HOSPICE CARE: 18 & older: valid driver’s license & own transportation: visit patients, errand assistance, light housekeeping & cooking, read to patients, activity aides, volunteers for special events

MERCY MEDICAL: 21 & older: mornings: activity aides (bingo, music groups); weekday office aides

ODYSSEY HEALTH CARE: 18 & older: Notary Public on call as needed to notarize documents for patients in Mobile & Baldwin Counties; bridge instructor, companion visits, group projects, call patients on weekends, weekday office aides; pet therapy volunteers; yard care for clients; beautician to visit homebound clients as needed for shampoos, etc.

ASERACARE HOSPICE: 18 & older: with valid driver’s license & own transportation to visit patients in homes, assisted living centers & nursing homes, call or write patients daily, weekday office aides , pet therapy volunteers, beautician for home assignments

SPRING HILL MEDICAL CENTER: 18 & older: openings for heart center information desk, escort, newspaper distribution

INFIRMARY WEST: 18 & older: gift shop, information desk, surgical waiting & light clerical assistance

COVENANT HOSPICE: patient/family support volunteers, 11th hour support volunteer to sit with patient nearing death to insure patient does not die alone, weekday office aides

 

NURSING HOMES:

SACRED HEART RESIDENCE: LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR: visitors, activity aides for bingo, crafts, music programs

OUR SOUTHERN HOME: Mondays-Saturdays: poker player & bridge player to participate in games with residents; activity aides for crafts & other recreational projects

EIGHT MILE NURSING & REHABILITATION:  answer telephones on weekends & evening hours during the week; accompany residents to appointments

KINDRED HEALTH CARE: volunteer to accompany residents on city bus to & from medical appointments on weekdays

 

SENIORS:

VIA! SENIOR CITIZENS SERVICES MOBILE HOUSING BOARD COMMUNITY CENTER AIDE: 18 & older, weekdays: activity aides to assist staff with recreational activities for Housing Board Senior Residences: arts, crafts, sewing, quilting, knitting, painting, singing, special events

 

THRIFT/GIFT SHOPS:

HABITAT RESTORE, PENELOPE’S CLOSET: staffers: greet customers, operate cash register, sort & price clothing
